Ad hoc concepts: atomic or decompositional?*
نویسنده
چکیده
The meanings of words are frequently pragmatically modulated in context, so that the concept a word is used to communicate is different than what it encodes. In this short paper, I begin to consider the nature of these communicated, „ad hoc‟ concepts. I start from the assumption that the concepts encoded by monomorphemic lexical items are atomic – or, at least, that the stable concepts these lexical items are often used to communicate are – and assess whether it is plausible to maintain that genuinely ad hoc concepts are also atomic, or whether some variety of decompositional account is to be preferred.

On Securing Atomic Operations in Multicast AODV
Multicast is an important communication pattern in Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) that involves the transmission of packets to a group of two or more hosts, and thus can support group-oriented applications. Securing multicast routing in MANET is crucial in order to enable effective and efficient implementations of such applications. However, security techniques typically add more complexity to t...
متن کاملIn defense of definitions
The arguments of Fodor, Garrett, Walker and Parkes [(1980) Against definitions, Cognition, 8, 263-367] are the source of widespread skepticism in cognitive science about lexical semantic structure. Whereas the thesis that lexical items, and the concepts they express, have decompositional structure (i.e. have significant constituents) was at one time “one of those ideas that hardly anybody [in t...
متن کاملLexical pragmatics, ad hoc concepts and metaphor: A Relevance Theory perspective
Ostensive communication, the paradigm case of which is verbal communication, is the domain of a dedicated cognitive system, according to Relevance Theory (RT). This ‘pragmatics’ module is responsible for inferring the content or meaning that the communicator intends by his/her ostensive stimulus. An important sub-process within the system is the adjustment or modulation of lexically-encoded mea...
متن کاملSurvey of clustering techniques for mobile ad hoc networks Técnicas de agrupamiento para redes móviles ad hoc
Clustering methods allow fast connection and also better routing and topology management of mobile ad hoc networks (MANET). In this paper a survey of clustering techniques for MANET is presented and some preliminary concepts for designing clustering algorithms are introduced. These concepts relate to network topology, routing schemes, graph partitioning and mobility algorithms. In addition, som...
متن کاملImproving Quality of Service Routing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks Using OLSR
Mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) are constructed by mobile nodes without access point. Since MANET has certain constraints, including power shortages, an unstable wireless environment and node mobility, more power-efficient and reliable routing protocols are needed. The OLSR protocol is an optimization of the classical link state algorithm. OLSR introduces an interesting concept, the multipoint r...
